When you are trying to sell your home, one of the most important things you can do is to make your house clutter-free. That means going into each room and either packing away things you don’t use on a regular basis or throwing away that items you’ve wanted to throw out for a while. Clutter makes spaces seem smaller. Make your closets appear bigger by packing away extra shoes, clothes, blankets, coats and sporting equipment — all those things we accumulate in our closets but only use seasonally.
The same thing goes for kitchens and bathrooms. Buyers want counter space, cabinet space, storage space, and more space. The counters should be kept clear of mail, appliances, dishes, cookbooks, etc. Pack up the extra plastic ware, holiday china, and special-use items so your cabinets look spacious and organized. Make sure the bathroom counters are clear of toiletries, hair dryers, and other items even though you use them every day. Keep them put away neatly under the sink and pack away in boxes any extra items you are storing there. It can seem like a hassle but it will be worth it when your house sells.
Next, go through the house once again and de-personalize. That means packing up photos, knick-knacks, and mementos. These things may not necessarily make your house look cluttered, but they make it harder for buyers to imagine themselves in your house. Make it easy for buyers to picture their own personal items in your living room or bedroom. Not only that, it keeps your personal items safe from accidental breakage or possible theft.
What’s the best part of organizing your house? Less packing once the time comes to move!
